VISITING PROFESSOR of THEATRE - SCENIC DESIGN
RANK: Visiting Assistant Professor (Anticipated national tenure-track search in the next year).
DATE OF APPOINTMENT: August 15, 2011 (classes begin Sept 1).
RESPONSIBILITIES: Teach courses in elements of design, drawing and rendering, scenic painting and related topics according to interest and experience. Design scenery; advise student scenic designers, painters, and properties; and work with full-time technical director in a multi-disciplinary Department of Music, Theatre and Dance.
QUALIFICATIONS: MFA or PhD in scenic design. Professional experience. Evidence of theatrical design artistry, teaching aptitude, ability to teach a range of courses, effective organizational and communication skills. Enthusiastic commitment to teaching students in a liberal arts setting and to a positive collaboration with fellow artists. Experience and interest in other design area(s) desired.
THE DEPARTMENT: The department offers the BFA in Theatre Design and Technology, Acting and Musical Theatre, the BA in theatre as well as degrees in Music and Dance including graduate programs in Music. Each year, there are five mainstage faculty-directed productions, a student-directed series and two student dance concerts as well as a variety of musical events. The department employs 28 full-time (7 in Theatre) and approximately 70 part-time (11 in Theatre) faculty, serving 120 Theatre majors. Varner Hall, home of the Department, contains a Studio Theatre, a Lab Theatre and a Recital Hall plus rehearsal/ teaching spaces and scene shop (shared with Meadow Brook Theatre) and costume shop.
