The School of the Arts at Purchase College, SUNY, seeks candidates for a one-year full-time appointment as Visiting Assistant Professor of Theatre Arts for the 2018-19 academic year. The position will begin the fall semester of 2018, and is subject to budgetary approval. The successful candidate will have a specialty in one or more of the following areas: African-American theatre and performance, Latinx theatre and performance, and/or Applied Theatre. Special consideration will be given to candidates with professional practice experience in some related aspect of theater-making and whose work and teaching emphasizes the intersections between scholarship and practice.
In addition to teaching courses in their area of specialty, candidates should be prepared to teach foundational courses within the Theatre and Performance BA program, such as Introduction to Theater and Performance Studies and Theater Histories, as well as studio courses in one or more of the following areas: acting, devised theatre, directing, documentary theatre, performance poetry, performing oral history, playwriting, and/or solo performance. Responsibilities will also include mentoring upper level undergraduate students, academic advising and community service (which encompasses committee work as well as College, School, and departmental governance).

We seek candidates committed to training a diverse student body in theater as a liberal art; to integrating multicultural experiences into instructional methods and research tools; and to providing training within the context of a public undergraduate institution housing a unique combination of Liberal Arts, Science, and Arts Conservatory programs. The BA program in Theatre and Performance encourages creativity, intellectual curiosity, social engagement, and critical thinking. The core requirements combine scholarship and practice to provide students with a strong foundation in theatre history and dramatic literature, with mandatory stagecraft/production courses.
Candidates must have a terminal degree (Ph.D. or M.F.A.) or equivalent professional experience and preferably at least two years of teaching experience.
