Film & Theatre Chair & Musical Theatre Professor Positions at SJSU

SJSU’s Film and Theatre department offers B.A. degrees in two majors: Theatre Arts and Radio-Television-Film, runs multiple theatre stages/spaces (with accompanying scene and costume shops) as well as an FM radio station and a film production company (Spartan Films). The College of Humanities and the Arts, which houses F&T, also runs the state-of-the-art Hammer Theatre, a City of San José/SJSU partnership that allows opportunities for co-productions as well as signature department-produced theatre/RTVF events.

 

DEPARTMENT CHAIRPosition requires a Ph.D. or M.F.A. in a field of Radio, Television, Film or Theatre, with sufficient publications or creative productions to warrant tenure and Associate or Full professor. Administrative experience required, including managing staff/budgets.

MUSICAL THEATRE PROFESSOR Position requires Ph.D. or M.F.A. in Musical Theatre or related field, with demonstrated artistic/professional achievement (proven ability to direct stage musicals) and university teaching experience. Candidate will develop/teach courses that serve a diverse body of theatre students, emphasizing practical training for musical theatre performance; emerging trends in musical theatre; and history/theories of the genre.

Associate Professor (Tenure Track) in Film & Television

We are seeking candidates with the experience and vision to merge the art and craft of cinematic storytelling with the strengths of the first degree-granting theater conservatory in the country. While film and television is not a degree-granting major in the School of Drama, work for camera is integral to every discipline we teach. Responsibilities: Organize and lead a visionary, interdisciplinary curriculum. Teach and mentor students in every discipline taught, including the BFA and MFA acting, directing, dramatic writing, dramaturgy, design, and production technology programs. Anchor a team of interdisciplinary instructors at the top of their fields. Cultivate a film and television practicum in a collaborative, instructive environment. Advisement of students in classwork and production.

Qualifications: An established reputation in the film and television industry. Prior leadership and teaching experience in an academic or production context. An MFA degree OR commensurate professional experience. Proven skill at leading teams in camera-based production both in front of and behind the lens. Experience with a broad range of film and television genres and a working knowledge of myriad producing and creative disciplines. Experience with new technologies such as performance capture, digital media, special effects, 3D, VR or others.
