Scenographer, Theater, Film, and Dance

Humboldt State University’s Department of Theatre, Film and Dance invites applications for an academic year tenure-track faculty position in Scenography. We seek a scenographer with expertise and professional experience in Scenic Design and Art Direction, Lighting, Properties and Production Design, Technical Direction and potentially Sound Design for theatre. An earned MFA or equivalent in theatre or related field from an accredited college or university is required at the time of appointment. We seek a working theatre artist who will teach undergraduate classes in these design and technology areas, general education classes, theatre arts major courses and be responsible for scenic, lighting or other design areas for 1-4 mainstage productions annually as the designer and/or as a mentor to student designers. The Theatre Arts program provides hands-on learning supported by a solid foundation in theory and history. Students participate in performance, design and technology in order to prepare them for jobs in professional, not-for-profit and community theatre, and potentially to prepare them for graduate study. At every level of their education, students are required to actively participate in department productions to apply their classroom knowledge into experiential activities.

Assistant-Associate Professor of Sound Design – UC San Diego

THE DEPARTMENT OF THEATRE AND DANCE at UC San Diego (http://theatre.ucsd.edu) invites applications for a theater artist in Sound Design, beginning July 1, 2018. The academic appointment for this position will be for a tenure- track Assistant Professor OR tenured Associate Professor depending upon the candidate’s experiences and accomplishments. The successful applicant will serve as a core member of a professional design training program and is expected to participate in all facets of the department life, including mentorship and supervision of MFA designers’ production work, teaching graduate and undergraduate courses, recruitment, curricular planning within the design area, and participation in discussions of departmental production seasons. The appointee will be expected to bring continuing innovation to the teaching of sound design. In order to advance in the professorial series, the candidate must continually and effectively engage in research and/or creative activity of high quality and significance.

Required Qualifications: MFA or equivalent professional experience in sound design; a history of productions at the national level; evidence of teaching potential or experience teaching undergraduate and graduate courses such as Intro-Advanced Sound Design, Sound Systems Design, and Digital Audio Processing. The ideal candidate will have strong or potential accomplishments in areas contributing to diversity, equity and inclusion, and a desire to play a leadership role in advancing UC San Diego’s commitment to achieving excellence and diversity. The preferred candidate will have expertise in any of the following areas: music composition, audio engineering, cultural origins of sound, interactive performance technologies for sound design, contemporary practices in dance sonification.

Salary is commensurate with experience and qualifications based on University of California pay scales.

Design and Technical Director

DePauw University seeks a full-time Design and Technical Director, who oversees all scenery, lighting, sound, video, and other technical needs for all performing arts events. Master’s degree or equivalent professional experience required; degree in technical theatre preferred. Experience with AutoCAD and/or Vectorworks, and Pyrotechnics, is desirable.

Some duties will include the following:

• Hiring, training, evaluating, and supervising work-study crew for technical requirements of concerts and productions, as well as the overall support of all performing arts events.

• Competency to design scenery, lighting, sound, and video projections for performing arts events is desired, but may have a concentrated interest in one area.

• Oversee the construction of theatre sets.

• Review technical riders for guest artists as needed by the Director of Productions.

• Assist with the needs of guest artist events.

• Assist in developing a technical plan for space upgrades.
